The Oral Care Category Lead, Unilever Nigeria Plc, Mrs. Ibironke Ugbaja, has said that about 59 per cent of Nigerians do not brush their teeth day and night.

Unless this is checked, she said, the rate of oral health diseases would continue to increase.
Ugbaja said this on Monday during this year’s kick-off of the World Oral Health Day celebration in Lagos.
She said, “We have seen the transformative impact that brushing twice daily has on the oral health of Nigerians.
Our goal is to continue driving improved oral care practices for a cavity free smile Nigeria.

We are also aware that healthy dental habits start in childhood, which is why it’s vital that the Brush Day and Night campaign reaches more children. We have reached over 2.5 million children in about 3,500 schools since the inception of the programme. Our goal is to reach 10 million children by 2020

In his address, the President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr. Bode Ijarogbe, noted that oral diseases had gradually become the most common diseases worldwide, despite the fact that it was easily preventable through simply brushing of the teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

Ijarogbe explained that the World Oral Health Day was set aside globally to celebrate the benefits and impact of having good oral hygiene.

He said that about 90 per cent of people could suffered oral disease during their lifetime if they failed to imbibe the culture of brushing their teeth twice a day.

Ijarogbe noted that there were only about 4,125 registered dentists in the country, which left 40,000 people to a dentist. This, according to him, has made many people not to be able to afford good dental care.

He said, “We are proud of our partnership with Unilever Nigeria Plc, who has made the success of the previous World Oral Health Day celebrations possible with their immense support towards oral health in Nigeria.

“This year’s collaboration is coming after Pepsodent emerged first globally in the World Oral Health Day 2016 challenge ahead of 31 countries. It is imperative to prevent oral diseases in Nigeria by ensuring people brush twice a day, every day.

The Federal Ministry of Health, represented by the Head of Dentistry, Dr. Bola Alonge, commended the initiative, saying that, “Less than 20 per cent of Nigerians have access to oral care services which focus on the curative care. Many oral health diseases can easily be prevented through simply brushing twice a day.

“This is why the Federal Ministry of Health and Unilever have taken on the task to teach children to brush day and night. Children are the change agents of the nation and hence we need to catch them young.”
