The Medical Director, Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Dr. Jojo Onwukwe, was on Tuesday arrested by operatives from the Police Headquarters over allegations of abuse of office, rascality and corruption.
The arrest, which took place immediately after the inauguration of governing boards of parastatals, agencies and institutions under the Ministry of Health at the International Conference Centre Abuja, was sequel to a petition filed against him by aggrieved staff of the hospital.
Our reporter gathered that the workers, in the petition to the Honourable Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, lamented the diversion of funds meant for the hospital and workers into private pockets to the tune of N50m.
The aggrieved staff also decried the hospital’s fall from grace to grass as a result of the incompetence and negligence of the Onwukwe-led management of the hospitals, which they accused of victimization, fraud and refusal to pay an eleven months’ salary arrears, among other similar offences.
A source at the Police Headquarters, who asked not to be named, told DAILY POST that a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) acted on the investigation by arresting and investigating the allegations against Onwukwe.
According to the source, “Dr. Onwukwe was accused of rascality, high-handedness, abuse of civil service rules and corruption by staff of the hospital.
“He has been arrested and after our investigations, we will charge him to court,” the source said.
